Future transport? The sky’s the limit

Elon Musk’s recent remarks to Don Lemon about future Tesla products was intriguing in several respects, not the least of which were Musk’s teasing hints about the next-gen Roadster (“not really a car”) and how it would marry technologies from Tesla and SpaceX.

This was just a day or two after I stumbled across a post on an obscure mid-Fifties dream car, the delightfully named Astra-Gnome, based on the compact Nash Metropolitan and designed by Richard Arbib.

It’s funny how the human brain works. But these two rather different stimuli got me thinking about all the cool and edgy vehicle designs I’ve seen posted lately by LinkedIn friends and acquaintances (Daniel Darancou and Brett Patterson to name just two).

Some of them spring from recent AI programs, but many start — like the Astra-Gnome — from the minds of creative thinkers.

I’m not sure why, but the spacey designs also got me wondering about future propulsion systems and renewable energy — and not just for terrestrial vehicles.

We know lots already about hydrogen fuel cells and advanced batteries. But what’s outside the box? Fusion? Plasma? What else lurks on the near horizon?

Fun to dream about the future of sustainable transportation, no?
